Chapter 19

Moving On

J.B.

I smiled a little as the ball went through the hoop and the tattered net.

“J.B. Donovan is a monster today! Take that shit!” Jazz was talking mad shit to our competition.

The sunny March day was warmer than expected, so some friends called Jazz and me up to shoot a few games in the park. It had been a while since I’d been social, so I gave in and met up with my crew, ready to play. Truth be told, I needed to relieve a little stress and a few games of ball would help. At least for a little while, it would get my mind off of Shanelle.

It had been a month since we split up, and I still missed and craved her. I buried myself in my classes, the newspaper, and making paper. I had become a robot, a machine, doing everything by rote. I kept to myself most of the time.

Only my mom and Jazz knew the reason why I almost worked myself to death over the past month. I mean that literally. I had gotten to the point where I wasn’t even eating. The first couple of weeks without her were pure hell. It took every ounce of willpower that I had to keep from answering her calls and texts. On many occasions, I found myself pulling her number up on my phone, but my wounded pride wouldn’t allow me to make the call.

One night I lost the fight with my desire for her. I got in my car and drove to her place, but kept going when I saw his car parked next to hers. It was after midnight, and seeing his car there so late had me seeing red.

I wanted to get out of my car, knock on the door, and act a damn fool. But, I had no right to. I sent her away. It wasn’t the other way around. She had wanted to work it out. I hadn’t; or so I tried to convince myself.

I was frustrated about it all, so I took my frustration out on my friends, Charmaine and Lyric, on the basketball court. Jazz and I had already beaten them two games to none.

“Y’all not tired yet?” Jazz taunted. “It’s gotta be hard as hell to keep takin’ these beat downs!”

They talked shit back and forth throughout the third game. I spit a little bit, too, making an effort to enjoy the game and the afternoon. After our third victory, we all agreed to meet at Applebee’s for drinks later that evening.

“Wanna hit the club up after Applebee’s?” Jazz asked while we made our way to my car.

“Sounds good,” I answered. “I need to get out and play for a little bit anyway. It’s been a minute.”

“That’s what’s up,” she said as we climbed into the car. Once we hit the road, she hit me with the question that I knew she had been itching to ask. “So have you talked to Shanelle yet?”

“Nope,” I answered, keeping my eyes on the traffic ahead of us.
